AUDIBLE’S DRACULA REVIEW: THE ALL-STAR CAST AND NEW AI FEATURES.
By London Audiobooks ·
In brief
- Audible released a new full-cast Audible Original of Bram Stoker’s Dracula on 1 October 2026, with Jonathan Bailey as the Count and Ella Purnell as Mina.
- It was adapted by Robyn Ahern, directed by Mary Lambert (Pet Sematary) and scored by Ilan Eshkeri, with full sound design. Audible UK lists it as available in Dolby Atmos.
- The Observer’s Miranda Sawyer called it “immersive, lavish and gloriously OTT” and said director Mary Lambert “has delivered a triumph”.
- Dracula is the launch title for Audible’s Character Guide, which shows who is speaking in real time, and for its first AI Interactive Story, a live conversation with Renfield.
- The features are in a limited beta for US and UK Audible customers. Versions in four more languages launched on the same day, with German due on 9 February 2027.
A full-cast Dracula for Halloween
Audible announced the production on 22 July 2026, in what Deadline called one of its biggest rollouts to date, adapting Stoker’s 1897 novel as a full-cast audio experience in seven languages, each with its own local cast. The English-language version, alongside French, Italian, Castilian Spanish and Latin American Spanish, launched on 1 October 2026. German follows on 9 February 2027, and a Brazilian Portuguese version is due in 2027. (Audible; Deadline)
The adaptation puts Mina at the centre: she pieces together letters, diary entries and testimony to hunt the predator stalking the people she loves. Aurelie de Troyer, Audible’s Head of Content, International, said the production “elevates the psychological thriller at Dracula’s core, with the battle between Mina and Dracula as the heart of it all.” (Audible)
Who plays whom
The English-language cast, as listed by Audible and Deadline:
- Jonathan Bailey as Count Dracula
- Ella Purnell as Mina
- Aimee Lou Wood as Lucy
- Louis Partridge as Jonathan Harker
- David Jonsson as Dr Seward
- Johnny Flynn as Renfield
- Lesley Manville as Mrs Westenra
- Francis Lovehall as Arthur
- Maggie Gyllenhaal as Professor Van Helsing
Behind the microphone, Mary Lambert makes her audiobook directing debut. The script is by Robyn Ahern, a recipient of the Bisha K. Ali Screenwriters Fellowship, in her first lead credit. Ilan Eshkeri, who scored Audible’s 1984, wrote the original score. (Audible)
What the critics say
In the Observer, Miranda Sawyer called it “immersive, lavish and gloriously OTT”, writing: “The sound is wraparound, the music full of atmosphere, the script a rollercoaster.” She singled out Bailey’s Count as “the best of the lot”, a performance that “sits just the right side of camp to be utterly compelling”, and praised Gyllenhaal as a Van Helsing who is “wonderful”. She noted that Ahern “takes a few liberties with the original story, but who cares when she serves up such a blood-and-drama-packed six hours.” (The Observer)
The Times ran its review under the headline “This Dracula has serious bite (it made me shriek in my kitchen!)”, describing it as an all-star audio drama “so gripping and vivid you may well jump out of your skin”. (The Times)
At Gizmodo, Isaiah Colbert noted that the six-chapter production has no narration, with the cast fully embodying their characters, and said he was never lost while listening, crediting “the superb sound design”. (Gizmodo)
Character Guide and the Renfield Interactive Story
Dracula is also the launch title for two new Audible features announced on 1 October 2026, which Audible says were built in close collaboration with creators, using AI:
- Character Guide shows who is speaking in real time on the player page and offers spoiler-free character cards with the performers’ headshots and bios. Audible says listeners will soon be able to ask questions about the production as it plays. It is also available on the Audible Original of George Orwell’s 1984 and will come with Exoplanet, by Benjamin Percy with executive producer Andy Weir, out on 5 November.
- Interactive Story is a bonus experience using generative AI, conversational design and sound production. In the first one, Renfield speaks first, gives the listener a role, goal and stakes, then reacts in real time to what the listener says. Audible says creators define the opening scenes, turning points and character persona.
- Visual Explorer, a third feature, will show images and maps at key moments, starting with The Cultural Tutor’s Grand Tour.
All three are rolling out in a limited beta for US and UK Audible customers. (Audible; TechCrunch)
Not everyone is convinced. Engadget’s Lawrence Bonk called Character Guide “pretty useful” but wrote that the generative AI side of Interactive Story “doesn’t give me much hope”. (Engadget)
Why it matters for audio producers
Dracula shows where premium audio is heading. The production leans on star casting, a full score, detailed sound design and Dolby Atmos, and it drops a traditional narrator in favour of a dramatised cast. Audible is also adding features around the performance rather than replacing it: Character Guide puts the performers’ names and faces in front of listeners as they listen. For publishers and rights owners, it is a clear marker of the production values the biggest titles now compete on.
